That’s more units than all publicly available sales data for Xenogears/sagas/and blades combined. Ryu Ga Gotoku has surpassed 11 million units franchise wide. Which If we really are switching gears to worldwide, you’re giving me far more ammunition to work with. I’m confused why you're giving me this data unless we are opening the door to the worldwide market. But both figures you quoted are accumulative worldwide sales, not specific sales here in the west. Where are you getting your Xenoblade sales numbers? I can see XC: DE sold 1.32 million as of August of this year, and Xenoblade 2 sold 1.92 million as of December of last year. Especially if we are talking about best RPG of the year, not most successful. If I was to say a game SHOULDNT be on this list, its absolutely Genshin Impact, thats just gross. I'm not at all saying it shouldn't be here, it absolutely deserves it. Especially for supposedly "niche" games.Īs for prior entries not being RPGs, I don't think they care, it qualifies as an RPG so it could be nominated and its a recent game that people love so it got nominated. Yakuza is doing better in the west than it was before, but I suspect not 1 million better, and also, I'd actually claim if it had a million in the West for a given entry, we would actually know because if there is one thing game publishers like its surprising sales numbers PR. In terms of Xenoblade, remember, Xenoblade DE has already sold over a million, and Xenoblade 2 over 1.5 million in the West. Game pass absolutely leads to sales but in that case its acting like a demo. In terms of game pass, thats a different discussion, I will comment that its only been on game pass for about a year, and, if we are talking about sales which we kind of are, I mean those arent sales. A successful PC port doesn't mean the PC port was a million seller. It just is, Yakuza is rising massively compared to where it used to be, thats outstanding, but remember, PC late port sales likely make up a small number of the total sales of the series, the PS4 and Xbox One ports got far more marketing and still likely represent a vast majority of Western sales. Xenoblade is more successful than Yakuza in the west. Which is great, I hope more people get the chance to explore the streets of Kamurocho. But evidence like Microsoft’s push for Yakuza games to be included in its Gamepass, a push for Like a Dragon as a timed next-gen exclusive on Xbox for the next 6 months, Yakuza 0-5 being released on Steam, Judgment surpassing "western sales expectations", and a brief Bakamitai meme that originated here in the west, are strong indicators that the series is not as niche as it once was. A number hard to quantify since up-to-date sales numbers from Sega are tricky to track down. My main reason for commenting, however, is to argue the claim that the Xenoblade franchise is more successful than the Yakuza franchise here in the west. Something that I think it handles well, but not quite as well or as mechanicaly deep or complex as Xenoblade or P5R. Like a Dragon is the first time Ryu Ga Gotoku has dipped its toes into a traditional RPG system. I can say I’m slightly confused with these choices but for different reasons. As someone who has first-hand experience with, Like a Dragon, Persona 5 Royal, and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. Hello, chronicler of all things Kamurocho here.
